The FMCC Luncheon “EU-China Health & Wellness synergies: What's around the corner?”
The global wellness economy is now a $6.8 trillion market. China is the world’s second-largest healthcare market with an estimated value exceeding $1 trillion in 2024. For European and Chinese businesses, the question is no longer whether to enter this market, but how to navigate the corridor effectively.
At the 19 March FMCC Luncheon 2026, we moved past the "what" and focused on the "how." We were delighted to host Ms. Echo Chan, President of the Macau European Chamber of Commerce (MECC), who unveiled a compelling new blueprint for market access that is redefining the landscape. Her key insight?
The Hengqin-Macau Nexus is emerging as the ultimate incubator platform.
Here is the model she presented:
- Innovate in Hengqin: Leverage its R&D capabilities and proximity to the Greater Bay Area.
- Establish in Macao: Utilize its unique status as a bridge between China, the Lusophone world, and Europe.
- Target European Consumers: Create a seamless ecosystem for Chinese enterprises to scale internationally with compliance and confidence.
The discussion confirmed three massive positive signals:
- The scale of the global wellness economy now rivals the entire tech sector.
- The rapid rise of the health and wellness tourism sector.
- The consumer shift from reactive healthcare to proactive wellbeing.
We would like to thank Ms. Echo Chan for her contribution and the FMCC members for their constructive questions, as well as Artyzen Grand Lapa for co-sponsoring the event and delivering exquisite food and excellent service.
